Mental Hygiene

by Quido Haškovec

In the mirror you can see,

perceived features of your bodily frame

which barely connect to the mind.

In the mirror you can see,

if you gouge your eyes out

the perceived meaning of your life.

It is when I brush my teeth, that I am

hypnotized by cyclical movements of my hand

mimicking the daily routine it puts into motion.

It is when I brush my teeth,

but only when my gums bleed

that I think about my loved ones.

When the brush caresses my hair,

I fall like a teardrop

slowly rolling down my left cheek.

When the brush ravages my hair,

and I realize I’ll go bald

the future does not seem lost.

Sometimes when I sit on the toilet,

I smile while emptying my bowels.
